The Seven Deadly Sins
The 7 deadly sins can be interpreted and understood from various references: Whether through religion, literature or pop culture, these sins have always been present in history and still do up until this day. Through this project, I wanted to deconstruct the idea of the 7 deadly sins from the church, and demonstrate how they are seen in our day-to-day life.
Although I was greatly inspired by the biblical history of the 7 deadly sins to understand their meanings, I chose to approach this theme through a modern lens, where our environment becomes the subject to represent each one of them. I believe that humans in their constant day-to-day life, demonstrate the sins, whether it’s through a simple thing such as eating more fast food than we’re supposed to (gluttony), or simply littering instead of using trash cans (which can be interpreted as a sign for sloth).
While it is true that the 7 deadly sins dive deeper into human behavior, it is important to realize that the smallest actions can often lead to greater sins, whether we realize it or not. Through this project, I was able to use my personal interpretation of the theme, along with some literary and religious references to create self-portraits based on Christian art, and still life images which embody the modern aspect of the 7 deadly sins.
